13 Card Rummy

13 card rummy is a popular card game in India that is played with a standard 52-card deck, including the joker card. The game is widely known as Paplu across the country.

What is 13 Card Rummy?

13 card rummy game is a skill-based game that requires players to form valid sets and sequences with the dealt 13 cards. To play this variant of rummy, you need 2 to 6 players. Each player is dealt 13 cards and are required to make a valid arrangement of those cards including at least 2 sequences out of which one should be a pure sequence.

The Rummy game has a long and rich history, but its exact origins are somewhat shrouded in mystery. While some historians claim that the game originated in 9th century China, others believe that it came from Spain or Mexico. There are also theories that suggest that Rummy was derived from a card game played by the French or the British. However, the game’s popularity has spread across continents, and it is now played worldwide.

Types of 13 Card Rummy

Three of the most popular types of 13 card rummy are:

  • Points Rummy
  • Deals Rummy
  • Pool Rummy

Points Rummy

Points Rummy, also called 80 points rummy (since the maximum points a player can get is 80), is the most basic version of Rummy and is enjoyed by many beginners. In this variant, players play for points with pre-decided value. Each card has a value which is designated by points.

The maximum points a player can get in a Points Rummy game is 80. The points are calculated based on the players’ performances at the end of the round. The formula for the calculation is generally:

  • Player Winnings = (Total Points of all Losing Players) * (Points Value) – Entry fee.

Deals Rummy

Deals rummy is played with chips. Each player will be given an equal number of chips. The value of each chip is 1. The winner gets cash or chips equal to the sum of the points of the unmatched cards of the losing players multiplied by the point value. In deals rummy, the winner is the player who has the maximum chips at the end of all deals.

Pool Rummy

The objective of a pool rummy game is to score the lowest. The game is played in mainly two variations, 101 and 201. In 101 Pool Rummy, the game is played until the last player accumulates over 101 points, and in 201 Pool Rummy, the game is played until the last player accumulates over 201 points. There is also a third variant of the pool rummy known as 61 pools rummy where the objective of each player is to score less than 61 points.

Rules of 13 Card Rummy

The cards rank from high to low as follows: A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2. Face cards and aces are worth 10 points each. The objective of the game is to meld cards and make a valid declaration. As per the 13 card rummy rules, there should be at least two sequences out of which at least one must be a pure sequence.

Pure Sequence

To win in 13 card rummy, players need to create a pure sequence. A pure sequence is a pack of three cards of the same suit. A♥K♥Q♥ is an example of pure sequence.

Impure Sequence

To make an impure sequence, a player needs to have three or more cards of the same suit arranged in sequence but must include a joker – either wild or printed.
